RAYOGRAPHS

Con un piede infantile fermo nell’800
Man Ray usa i suoi modelli materiali – persone e cose –

attraverso distorsioni, mosaici e ‘puntillismi’.
Operazioni dosate ma comunque violente sul soggetto.
Anche durante la fasi del procedimento fotografico
gli elementi vengono spesso disconnessi:
la ripresa può essere estranea all’apparecchio fotografico;

(a.m. XII/’25)

To enjoy the work of Man Ray is to enjoy the wide range of illusion he creates.  He knows well how to handle magic and does so with clarity and in a practical way.  Sometimes it is in a simple trompe-l’oeil drawings in which, on a sheet of paper he draws a shadow which throws into relief an object beside it – the reverse of a three dimensional object casting its own flat shadow. …

There is no limit to the game of make-believe in which everything is masked.  Yet the illusion Man Ray achieves are not only visual; they often imply an interrogation of the object itself, which may or may not lead to solutions but which stimulates our enjoyment by the outrageous simplicity of the illusions.  He knows well that to banish illusion is to deny the arts their magic power.  (R.
